Second Life is Being Rebuilt for the Next Generation
The virtual world, Second Life celebrated its 11th birthday last Friday. To the average person, Second Life is that thing they signed up for years ago, walked around for 10 minutes and never returned to again. But, the virtual worlds marketplace has been a boon for creators and now the company behind Second Life, Linden Lab, is building a new world from scratch.
The new version of Second Life is still a ways off though. A beta is expected to be launched in 2015 with the final version expected in 2016. In the meantime, Linden Lab has already told its users that a new version is coming.
Second Life is most people’s first foray into a virtual world if you don’t count the MMORPG scene. The fact that there’s a new version coming is not a big deal, but the fact that along side it there will be an Oculus Rift version is. Some early testers have reported that a LOT of work still needs to be done, but once polished I’m guessing this will be quite popular. Now, what was the name of my Second Life avatar again? Has to be at least five years since I’ve logged on.
