Second Life was 13 years early to virtual reality — and it’s getting ready to try again
Second Life, the original virtual reality, may not be the media sensation it once was back in the heady days of 2003. Linden Lab is marshaling its expertise and experience in building immersive, functional virtual worlds to make a proper successor to the Second Life platform and take advantage of the bold new world of immersive VR. Specifically, Linden sees a huge opportunity in making it easier for people to build and share cool virtual reality experiences.
I was an early adopter of Second Life and regularly held meeting there and hung out with various groups of people. Given the experience they’re taking into this, if Linden Labs can pull of the VR element nicely they may find themselves the big boys on campus when competing metaverse platforms start arriving.
